My grandmother’s house was in the middle of the desert. My aunt grew up in a house on the other side of town. When I was growing up, I was always thinking about homes in the middle of the desert. I used to drive through the desert every Saturday morning, stopping by the house of my childhood friends to see if they had any news on our neighborhood.
You’re not the first person to mention these two places in the same sentence. It’s a testament to the fact that the desert is a place where you can find pretty much any type of structure. It’s the same way that you can find anything in the desert, whether it’s a house with a front yard, a house with an entrance, a house with a patio, or a house with a garage. You don’t even need a permit to build a house in the desert.
With the exception of maybe a few small, low-income enclaves, desert buildings are extremely common. As a matter of fact, its not uncommon for people to build a house in the desert because its cheaper and the desert can be a cheaper location than anywhere else. They are also easier to maintain.
